In 2005 Charlotte-Mecklenburg Schools was sued by five Mecklenburg charter schools to recover funds they believed CMS insufficiently apportioned to them, thereby causing the charter schools to be underfunded between 2002 and 2005. The Charters prevailed in court. From those days the Board of Education has never stopped claiming charter schools were robbing CMS students. This contributes to the myth that charter schools are the enemy. In other less wealthy and lower populated North Carolina counties, charters are held in high esteem.
